Daniel revealed in an interview, “The album is about the process of realizing the truth hidden in lies on the theme of a dystopian world in a cinematic form […] it’s a story of gaining enlightenment through uncovering truth from lies and a story about the realization to face our whole self. Depending on the listener, different endings can be imagined.”[s]

Daniel delved into each song in his shopping live and interviews.[s] [s]

Daniel told Billboard, “’WASTELAND’  is a song that expresses the betrayal of a firm faith and the moment of realizing it. The lyrics are all in English, signaling the beginning of a new narrative to more people and it seems that people can be more immersed in the cinematic concept, so it was released as a pre-release single.” “WASTELAND” was like a keyword that helped Daniel figure out the theme of the album. His first impression of it led him to organize various post-apocalyptic media. He always enjoyed movies, games, and novels with a dystopian worldview. The track was released fully in English to express the intense expressions with the soft pronunciation and melody line unique to English. Lyrics were the focus, and the recording itself didn’t take long. He wanted to give off a mature feeling and didn’t hide his natural husky voice as the first song recorded for the album.

Just by listening to the beat, “SOS” had the sense of a title track. He thought that the title itself “SOS” could be used to write lyrics with a simple but fun theme. The arrangement and instrumentals were like an extension of “PARANOIA” as a part 2 remake. Daniel said the clear concept could seem childish if executed wrong, so he worked on the lyrics for a long time because he wanted to melt into the character and tell a natural story. He finished recording in the studio he was accustomed to despite scheduling conflicts even after trying another studio.

“Supernova” mixes rock and K-pop. It reminded Daniel of a shounen anime opening with of a summer festival stage with fireworks and cheering. While it’s the least suitable song in the album, it’s his favorite. He had a strong attachment to this song to the point that he wanted to include it and organized the story. Daniel was excited when he sang and recorded it thinking about future stages. Daniel sang it differently from how he has sung so far to not give off the impression that the vocal range is high.

“Liar” is the most pop-like. The lyrics have a sad ending, but he thinks it’s a song that approaches honestly.

“Dreaming” is about pursuing dreams. Daniel wanted to put a gospel-like song with a holy feeling. He said that thanks to the drum sound from the bridge, the overflowing feeling was well-expressed. Recording took the longest time since there’s a lot of vocal detail. The song has a sad feeling and unravels the end of the album with an open ending.

Daniel’s comeback date was first announced on May 26 through a cinematic prequel trailer.[s] [s] The mini album’s name REALIEZ was dropped on May 31, and it has 3 symbolic keywords: REAL, LIE, and REALIZE.[s] [s]

On June 2, a pre-release song was teased for June 7 on the promotion calendar. Press articles revealed the track’s name as “WASTELAND” and that it was recorded entirely in English.[s] [s] The track release was accompanied by music sequence videos.[s] [s] The title track name “SOS” was revealed on the 12th, the same day he recorded for JTBC K-909.[s] [s]

His first confirmed variety show appearance to promote the comeback was as the very first idol on KBS 2TV Mr. House Husband‘s new format with housekeeping-dols.[s] [s] On June 19, Daniel participated in a Naver Comeback Shopping Live. Daniel also appeared on international YouTube channels, including GQ, Vogue, Buzzfeed Celeb, and hello82. In addition, he showed his Star Wars fanboy side on Lee Sanghoon TV.

REALIEZ surpassed 160,000 physical album sales within a week.[s]

The album also topped the iTunes Top Album charts in at least thirteen regions, including Brazil, Hungary, Indonesia,  Israel, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Romania, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam.[s] It also made the top 10 in other countries. The album itself debuted at #3 on the Worldwide iTunes Album charts.[s]

Pre-release track “WASTELAND” debuted at #27 on the Worldwide iTunes Song Chart and ranked among the top 10 on iTunes Top Song charts in various regions, including Chile, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Romania, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and more.[s] [s]

New tracks from the album have also successfully entered the Worldwide iTunes Song Chart: “SOS” at #30, “Liar” at #73, “Dreaming” at #79, and “Supernova” at #80.[s]

The music video was filmed in the Las Vegas desert in Nevada, USA. Daniel revealed in his shopping live that “SOS” took 3 days to film. There were two M/V versions released a day apart. The first MV focused on the cinematic plot and the other on performance.[s] [s]

The original synopsis summarized the story of the man who was an Angel of Death. Daniel as the protagonist starts to question his work ferrying souls to hell, wondering why people have to suffer even after they die. The man abandons his canoe, and the dead go missing. Daniel kills other Angels of Death who pursued him and takes their coins, which can deviate from the Law of Causation.

The dead were neither dead nor alive and couldn’t enter hell, so they settled in villages. Other Angels of Death sent more dead after Daniel, but he instead returned their souls with the coins to let them live again.

The other Angels of Death were angered that hell was empty. When they found Daniel, they planned to punish him in front of everyone. However, this was the man’s plan to call together all the demons and Angels of Death. The man used all his coins to destroy hell. However, peoples’ sins arose continually, so hell keeps getting created without fail. The man goes to destroy hell every day.[s]
